48” x 72”

Oil paint, encaustic

2021

This series explores my unknown heritage, genetic disorders, and the ongoing iconic symbolism of the chair in my oeuvre. The interior spaces are piecemealed from memories, waiting rooms, and studio corners. The dysfunction and unknown history of a found chair--broken and tossed to the curb, washed up from sea, or captured in perpetual waiting at a doctor’s office--is central to this ongoing series. The chairs are set up as a still life in my studio with multiple sources of light and painted from various perspectives to allow shadow and object distortion to interplay with formal elements of composition, form, and line. The comfortable amenity is detached from its only function, exploring my own body’s dysfunction in my disability.

Oil paint, encaustic, Unryu paper, soy ink

2021

Wallpaper imagery is created from French wallpaper designs and coastal organisms, screen printed onto large sheets of Unryu paper, and fused to the painting surface. The interior space echos the ongoing query of my lost heritage and contemporary experiences of passing time in waiting rooms and doctor’s offices, working with teams of specialists to treat my genetic disorder.
